An Architectural project – Fishing Market – Hastings

I am a third year architecture student, we got set a brief for a project to re design Hastings pier as it got burnt down due to arsonists here is a link from the BBC.

This project was to address issues in Hastings and re act to them in different ways and create unique programs for Hastings pier.

I began by analysing the site in different ways and re acting to it in different ways,

This then led me onto designing and creating a Fishing + Market + Restaurant program extending and enhancing the existing fishing village in the old town of Hastings. There are various iterations and processes which I have developed alongside this which are not included in this post.

Expanding the fishing Industry

Investigating into Hastings’s Fishing Industry as a typology, I began this by developing a series of hand drawn sections to expose certain areas within the industry and relationships between the town and fishing village. I also developed a memory section showing which areas stood out for me.

Fish Encounter

To involve and understand Hastings as a fishing village I conducted a 1 : 1 intervention / event to expose certain areas of the fishing trade. I did this by walking around with a box full of fish with ice in and attempted to sell locally caught fish purchased from RX fisheries, which sell fish on both a commercial and domestic level.

In developing these previous ideas I began to look at the social implications that a potential revitalized fishing industry program might have on Hastings.

Considering the site in section began to provide me with clear programmatic choices. The existing site conditions then began to inform my design decisions. Also considering the previous experiments and drawings.

This sketch drawing began to inform my design through the quick process of designing and editing certain aspects within my project. This acted as an aid throughout the design process, constantly referring to this and considering all aspects within the design.

These itterations were done very quickly but considering all aspects within design and programme.

I began a process of sketching – making then re sketching and re making. This process informed final design criteria through models and sketches.

This drawing was to split up the relationship between the existing old town and the propsed new pier structure.

Reacting to the existing site I considered all aspects within my design and then extracted these in axonamteric view.

External perspective – site relationship

Investigating the relationship of proposal to existing urban fabric

This external perspective is addressing the relationship between the town and the proposed pier structure. This was then considered with news articles and other ideas linking them back to the town improving and rejuvenating certain aspects within Hastings both economically and socially.
